Together
Hello Reader,
What is the best benefit when you hire a private tutor?
Tired of the lack of harmony at home when it comes to homework time? Hire a private tutor! Not seeing joy in your child’s educational experience? Hire a private tutor. Private tutors do more than just help a child who is failing a course.
(Don't have a school-age child? Please forward this email to a friend or relative who does!)
Tutors help students improve grades, manage workload, strengthen academic and critical thinking skills, reduce stress, and cultivate a healthy attitude about education. All of these help a student to gain confidence at school and at home, ensuring they are prepared for the next grade and beyond.
One-on-one personalized educational attention is the primary reason to hire a private tutor. There are big companies like Huntington Learning Centers that provide tutoring or private tutors running small businesses like mine in Apex, NC. Some of us are retired certified teachers who love what we do and want to keep on helping students!
Sometimes, a child needs tutoring for a semester and sometimes for their whole academic career. Those who see the value in tutoring become adept at telling me what they need help with. I love hearing stories about how they later use free campus tutoring in college or go on to tutor others because they know the benefits of a tutor.
5 reasons to hire a private tutor
- Personalized attention with targeted help to remediate or enrich learning
- Improved study skills, including time management and stress reduction
- Critical and creative thinking skills to prepare for future challenges
- Flexible scheduling, including online tutoring for busy families
- Grow academic confidence, motivation, and advocacy
Helping your child gain confidence by cultivating joy in educational experiences and improving communication skills with adults are huge side benefits of tutoring but rarely a reason listed on the paperwork. Many parents seek a tutor when their child is struggling academically, but some know that it’s a great way to start a school year and give their child a boost academically.
A tutor isn’t a crutch but can be a sounding board and a way to reduce stress at home for both parents and children.
A tutor can help students learn to manage projects and deadlines, plus track grades and strategize improvements. Study skills are crucial building blocks of education, and tutors can provide accountability for implementing them. Tutors can also help remediate subjects or extend special interest topics.
As a child learns to talk to a tutor about academics and discuss strengths and weaknesses, a child can also learn to advocate for themselves in the classroom and become more confident in asking teachers for help.
Personalized attention with targeted help on a flexible schedule is beneficial for all students, but especially for students with special needs. A tutor can provide specialized support for students with learning differences or special educational needs, offering strategies and techniques that are customized. Now that you know the benefits of a private tutor, let’s look at how to hire a private tutor, whether you want a tutor in Apex, NC or an online tutor.
How to hire a private tutor
Whether you want to hire an online private tutor or an in person tutor, you will need to find some options. First, start asking around for tutor recommendations. Word of mouth from happy clients is the best advertising! Librarians and school counselors often keep lists of tutors. Most tutors have a website or sheet of information detailing their expertise, their cost, and their availability. This should answer most of your general questions.
From there, you can request a consultation call or email to see if the tutor and the student are a good fit. Typically, there will be some paperwork to fill out and a way to schedule and pay for sessions. I offer my clients a free “meet and greet” session where we get to know each other a bit and the parents and students can ask questions and test out their electronics setup before our first session. A tutor can help you decide if once or twice a week tutoring is best for your child.
Tutoring is for students in public school, private school, homeschool, and international school. Tutoring is for everyone!
Overall, a private tutor can offer a level of support and customization that can make a significant difference in a child’s academic journey. If your child is not where you want them to be academically or not able to advocate for themselves in the classroom, give private tutoring a try. Smile more and sigh less this school year!
